The (not so) romantic conversation to have with your partner this Valentines Day

If you’re in a relationship with an Australian and you are considering your future as a couple, one of the things you will be thinking about is where you might want to live together. If Australia is part of this dream, then this series of blog posts is for you.

The (not so) romantic conversation to have with your partner this Valentines Day

When you meet someone and you form a romantic relationship it can be a very exciting time. You’re learning about them, and sharing your hopes and dreams for the future.

As the relationship progresses and you start talking about moving in together, sharing finances, and starting a family, there is an additional conversation that needs to be had for those who are not permanent residents or citizens of the same country.

This Valentine’s Day, KU Legal wants to encourage you to have those important conversations with your partner, particularly if your partner is an Australian Permanent Resident or Citizen and your future plans will involve applying for a partner visa for Australia.

Committing to the partner visa process is not one to be taken lightly. You need to provide evidence of your genuine and continuing relationship, and your shared life together, as part of the requirements to be granted a partner visa.

But a partner visa has its perks too:

  1. You can apply onshore or offshore for a Partner Visa
  2. When applying onshore you get a Bridging Visa with full work and study rights until your Partner Visa is decided
  3. You can include your dependent children as additional applicants on your Partner Visa application
  4. It is a pathway to permanent residency, once the second stage Partner Visa is granted
  5. You don’t have to be married to be eligible (see our article: I’m in a relationship with an Australian but we aren’t married, can I get a Partner Visa?)

If you’re still not sure where to start when having a conversation with your partner about applying for a partner visa, KU Legal are here to help. During an Eligibility Review with a KU Legal immigration expert, we can help you discover your options and answer any questions you both might have about applying for a partner visa.

If you want to discuss your eligibility for a Partner Visa, speak with the immigration experts at KU Legal:
