On 31 May 2023, the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (“Australia-UK FTA”) came into force.
This will have a number of positive implications for nationals of both countries:
- From 1 July 2023:
- UK citizens will be able to apply for a Working Holiday Visa between the ages of 18 and 35 (previously the age limit was 30).
- From 31 January 2024:
- The age limit for Australian citizens who wish to enter the UK under the Youth Mobility Scheme will also increase to 35 (it was previously 30) and applicants will be able to extend their stay for up to a total period of three years (currently the limit is two years).
- From 1 July 2024:
- UK citizens will be able to be granted up to three Working Holiday visas without having to meet any specified work requirements.
The Labour Market Testing requirements for UK citizens seeking to enter Australia in order to work is also expected to be abolished.
