Where to live in Australia? Perth v Brisbane

For those of you who are planning to move down under, you may be wondering which is the best city or state to live in.

Over the next few weeks, you will find our take on each of the States and Territories, and their capital cities for your information.

Perth v Brisbane

Both of these places sit at a similar location geographically in Australia, but on opposite sides of the country, so you can guarantee you will get sun and heat in both!

Why Perth?

Perth is a small city, yet rich due to the mining communities in the State and the FIFO workers who spend their money in Perth, but it packs a punch with places “nearby‘‘ to visit.

Just on the doorstep is Fremantle, so chilled and relaxed, and a hop over the ocean to Rottnest Island to meet a Quokka (pictured above) is a must when living in or visiting Perth.

Further afield are the lush areas of Margaret River and the great beaches of Busselton along with its almost 2km long pier. To the north of Perth is a vast area of desert including jewels such as Broome where you can find yourself a pearl!

Perth is known to be both commercial and cultural, just like Brisbane on the exact opposite side of the country.

Why Brisbane?

The capital of Queensland is a mecca for sun lovers and business people alike. Close to Brisbane you can find beautiful beaches, fantastic night life and chilled out environments in places such as Noosa, Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.

In Brisbane itself, most of the global businesses have made their presence felt by setting up offices here. As well as a strong commercial presence Brisbane offers a great way of life for families which can be a draw for those people coming to work for the aforementioned global businesses.

So, which one is the best?

Weatherwise, Perth is generally hotter and dryer than Brisbane which can be particularly humid during the summer due to heavy downpours of rain.

Location wise, Brisbane may win the race given that it is on the same side of the country as most other State and Territory capitals.

All in all, both cities have advantages and disadvantages. Deciding on which is right for you will depend on many reasons, such as if you have friends and family in one of those areas.

Overall though, we think both Perth and Brisbane are worth a look.

Good luck with your move!
