Vegemite: iconic Australian food

Vegemite is a yeast extract spread much-loved by many Aussies, making it an iconic Australian food. It is made from leftover brewers’ yeast extract and various vegetable and spice additives. It has a very dark reddish-brown color which is rich in vitamin B. It is thick like peanut butter and has a very salty taste.

Aussies use it on sandwiches, crumpets, and as an ingredient in pastries. It is said that Aussies bring Vegemite in their luggage when they travel outside Australia, for fear that they will not be able to find it.
