Travelling as an Australian Permanent Resident? There is something you should know…

When you become an Australian Permanent Resident you will usually receive a travel facility to allow you to go abroad.

But did you know this travel facility isn’t unlimited?

Australian Permanent Residents do not have an automatic right to return to Australia from overseas.

When you become an Australian Permanent Resident you are usually permitted a five year travel facility. This allows you to leave and re-enter Australia as many times as you like in the five years from the date your visa is granted, as long as your visa remains valid.

What are your options as a Permanent Resident to maintain your ability to travel after 5 years?

To maintain those travel rights, you either need to apply for:

  • a Resident Return Visa (“RRV”) if you wish to re-enter Australia as a Permanent Resident; or
  • Australian Citizenship which allows you to travel as an Australian Citizen.

To be eligible for an RRV with the maximum travel facility of five years, applicants need to have been in Australia as a Permanent Resident for a total of two years in the last five years. Historically over 80% of applicants meet this residence requirement.

Beware, if you enter Australia on a temporary visa when the travel facility on your permanent visa has expired, this may have an adverse impact on your visa status.
