The current Skilled Occupation List (“SOL”) is soon to be replaced by the new Consolidated Skilled Occupation List (“CSOL”) for the new Skills in Demand visa.
SOL is a set of occupations published by the Australian government, identifying professions currently in demand across the country. It helps manage Australia’s skilled migration program by focusing on roles that contribute to economic growth. Applicants for certain Australian visas, particularly skilled migration visas, must nominate an occupation on one of these lists and demonstrate they have the qualifications and experience required for that role.
There are a number of different Skilled Occupation Lists:
- Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL): focuses on occupations that are expected to remain in demand long-term.
- Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL): includes occupations expected to be in demand in the short term.
- Regional Occupation List (ROL): contains occupations specifically needed in regional areas, encouraging skilled migration to less populated areas of Australia.
However, the complexity of managing multiple lists for different visa categories has grown as workforce demands have become more intricate. In response, we are informed that the Australian government is introducing a streamlined approach in 2024 with the CSOL. By consolidating the various lists into one, the government aims to create a more transparent and straightforward process. This new list will replace the current SOL and will be used to determine eligibility for the new Skills in Demand Visa.
The draft CSOL has been released and is categorised into three groups:
- Draft CSOL Confident On List: skilled occupations that the Job Skills Australia (“JSA”) Migration Model suggests should be on the CSOL.
- Draft CSOL Targeted for Consultation List: skilled occupations the JSA Migration Model suggests should be targeted for stakeholder feedback.
- Draft CSOL Confident Off List: skilled occupations the JSA Migration Model suggests should not be on the CSOL.
These lists are currently in draft and nothing is set in immigration stone yet.
For a detailed view of occupations currently in shortage in Australia across each state and territory, we recommend that you explore the current Occupation Shortage List (“OSL”) which is released annually by JSA.
With the CSOL set to launch in 2024, prospective migrants should stay informed and, as we understand it from the Dept of Home Affairs, prepare for a more streamlined skilled migration process tailored to meet Australia’s future workforce needs.
