How to choose the right occupation?

How to choose the right occupation

Selecting the right occupation is a vital first step in your skilled migration journey, as it directly influences your visa application and migration process. But how do you determine the best occupation to choose? It requires a careful evaluation of several factors, with your qualifications and work experience being the most critical. Also, if you are seeking a Temporary Skilled Shortage visa, the role being offered to you by your employer should marry up with your qualifications and work experience. These should be accurately reflected in your CV to ensure the best possible outcome.

You can then use your CV and compare your occupation to those found on the Skilled Occupation List. This is accessed here – Department of Home Affairs website and includes all occupations – those on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (“MLTSSL”), the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL).

We suggest that you review the lists carefully and identify a short list of potential occupations where the duties and responsibilities detailed in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classifications of Occupations (“ANZSCO”), along with the duties and responsibilities for the role you are being offered, if applicable, appear to align with those in your CV. It is important that you know which sub-list your potential occupations belong to as this will help you to make the right choice.
